US oat imports year-to-date (Jun-Jan) are estimated at 1.073 MMT, up 3% from last year but 6% behind the five-year average.
Canadian exports to the US are up 6.4% YTD while Finnish exports are down 30%. No Swedish exports are showing up so far.
The current pace would put total 2019/20 crop year imports at 1.536 MMT. If realized, this would be up 3% from 2018/19 and come in just below the five-year average of 1.587 MMT.
Longer-term, imports are trending lower and posted negative growth over the past five years of 4.5%. Much of this decline is tied to the sharp reduction in imports for storage against CBOT oat futures.
US companies are increasingly focused on more targeted buying, gluten-free, glyphosate free and regional buying. This will continue to see imports drop for the next few years.
