Oat production in major South American markets are forecast at the second highest level in the past 10 years and well above averages

Oat production in Brazil, Argentina, and Chile, the three largest oat producers in South America, is forecast to climb to a combined 2.045 MMT. If realized, this would be up 14% from 2017 estimates of 1.796 and well above the five-year average of 1.649 MMT.

These countries account for 98% of South America’s annual oat production. The three countries support well-developed oat processing industries.

Chile, however, is the only major exporter of oats and oat products. Brazil and Argentina are relatively small exporters. Argentina has however exported volume in the 60s, 70s, and 80s, some to the US. This brings the question as to whether they could be potential suppliers to the EU this year.
